If you are enrolled in a program that includes an internship, practicum, or work experience component, Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires you to apply for a Co-op Work Permit to be eligible to work full-time during that portion of the program.

If you are extending your Study Permit you should indicate on your application that you would also like to apply for a Co-op Work Permit/Extension.

To be eligible for the Co-op Work Permit you must meet the following requirements below:

  • Have a valid Study Permit

  • Employment must be an essential part of your program of study in Canada

  • Your employment component cannot be more than 50% of your total program of study

Please note: the Co-op Work Permit can only be used for employment that is part of your official program of study. You may only work full-time during the designated period of your internship, practicum or work experience.
