Build your career in Early Childhood Education. Langara’s new online Infant Toddler Care and Education citation helps certified ECEs become Infant Toddler Educators in BC.
Langara College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) department is launching a new program to meet a growing need in British Columbia: the Infant Toddler Care and Education Citation program. This part-time, online credential is designed specifically for ECE graduates seeking to expand their skills and become certified Infant Toddler Educators in BC.
"There is a provincial shortage of qualified early childhood educators specializing in infant toddler care,” explains Andrea Dawson, the Department Chair of ECE. "This program offers a government-approved certification that equips graduates with the skills to meet the demands of early childhood education today."
A career-ready credential for ECE graduates.
The program is open to individuals who have completed an ECE certificate or diploma from any post-secondary institution. Graduates will be eligible to apply for Infant Toddler Educator certification in British Columbia, a credential that is increasingly sought after in childcare centres across the province.
"The main objective of this program is to provide a pathway for ECE graduates from any post-secondary institution to earn a highly valued credential in a field that is currently facing a significant shortage of qualified educators,” says Dawson.
Graduates will be prepared to provide developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive care and education to children under the age of three.
Designed for working professionals.
The Infant Toddler Care and Education Citation program is structured as a two-semester, part-time program delivered synchronously online in the evenings. This flexible format allows working professionals to balance their studies with their existing commitments.
Additionally, the program includes a six-week practicum component, where students gain hands-on experience in an infant toddler childcare center under the guidance of experienced educators.
"Students will complete their practicum with support from ECE faculty and onsite early childhood educators, ensuring they receive a rich, interactive educational experience," says Dawson.
Who is this program for?
This program is ideal for certified ECEs who want to upskill, re-enter the field with an enhanced credential, or expand their employment opportunities in infant and toddler care.
Dawson describes the ideal candidate as "someone who has completed their ECE and is looking to earn this credential through a comprehensive post-secondary program that values responsive and culturally sensitive care."
This aligns with Langara’s continued commitment to inclusive education that reflects Indigenous worldviews and supports diverse learners and families.
Build your career in early childhood education.
Graduates of the program will receive a Citation in Infant Toddler Care and Education, qualifying them to apply for certification as Infant Toddler Educators in BC. They will be well-positioned for career advancement, wage enhancement opportunities, and leadership roles within early years organizations.
