Hire a Co-op Student for a Work Term

Co-operative Education enables employers to access students with specialized skills to support short-term projects and fill staffing gaps. Co-op students are eager to learn and develop professional skills they can use as they move into their careers. They are ideal for bringing new perspectives and ideas to the workplace. The students are highly motivated and can apply classroom concepts in a live working environment. Students are available for full-time employment while they complete their degree due to the alternating Co-op work term structure of their programs.

Why hire a Co-op student?

By partnering with us you can:

  • Target students with specialized skill sets
  • Develop a pool of potential full-time employees, already proven effective in your workplace
  • Find students with specialized skillsets for short term projects
  • Access a diverse student group, including mature and mid-career level students
  • Use wage subsidies and funding to offset the costs of hiring

Flexible Placements to Suit Your Needs

Co-op placements are typically full-time for four months (420 hour minimum) and follow school semesters: January, May, and September. Some students are also available for eight-month placements or can complete Co-op on a part-time basis.

Have a start date or end date falling outside of the term? No problem – we allow for some flexibility.

Tip: It’s best to post your job up to four months in advance of hiring (e.g. January for the May semester).

About Langara's Co-op Program

Co-operative Education is a proven educational model that allows students to combine academic studies with curriculum-related, paid work experience to help them develop the skills they need to be successful in their future careers. “Co-op” gives students an opportunity to shape the development of their career path. Co-op applies the concepts learned in academic terms in a live work environment. Each Co-op work term is a minimum of 420 hours of paid work, either full-time over a four-month work term or part-time over an eight-month work term. Co-op students registered into a full-time Co-op course are considered full-time students.

Co-operative Education programs at Langara are committed to providing quality work placement opportunities that will best serve the interests of the employer and student. The College’s Co-op programs follow guidelines prescribed by: Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL Canada), the Ministry of Advanced Education, and Service Canada.

Wage Expectations

Students are normally paid at rates comparable to entry level employees performing similar tasks. Co-op Instructors maintain an ongoing record of common average wage rates for each specific field.

Co-op students are, in effect, hired as temporary full-time employees. Students in their second work term are generally assigned more responsibility and their wage rates are expected to increase.
