Vancouver, BC - Langara College is excited to announce a new program, the Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics starting in September 2020. In addition to the existing Associate of Science Degree in Bioinformatics, and the Diploma in Bioinformatics, Langara is the first College to offer this program in British Columbia.

“We are very proud to offer this cutting-edge STEM program at Langara. Our strong commitment to teaching and learning combined with faculty expertise and industry experience will provide students with high-demand skills and knowledge in this growing field,” said Gerda Krause, Dean, Faculty of Science.

During the four-year program, students will work with large biological data sets and develop skills to apply statistical tools for analysis. Graduates from the program will build their careers in industries such as health care, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences. The program offers an immersive co-operative education component that integrates academic studies with related, practical work experience. Students will work with industry partners, gain hands-on skills, and be well prepared for the job market.

"While bioinformatics is a booming field in science and has endless possibilities, no other colleges in in BC have a program specifically dedicated to it. This was one of the reasons why I applied to Langara for my Associate of Science Degree in Bioinformatics two years ago,” said Himmeshwar Singh, an applicant to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Bioinformatics program.

“There are numerous on-campus research positions that give you a chance to apply what you learned in class,” added Singh. “The Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics program has been designed specifically to ensure that students get plenty of industrial and actual hands-on experience before they graduate which should be very helpful in getting a job in the related field.”

Applications for the Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics program, starting in September 2020, are currently being accepted.
