Vancouver, BC – Langara College will celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Monday, February 11 with a panel of speakers, hosted by the 49Women in Science Circle. The panel will present to donors, accomplished female scientists, and women who study science at Langara. The event is part of Beyond 49, a celebration of Langara’s 49th year on West 49th Avenue.
The speakers include:
- Mazana Armstrong, Specialist Engineer and Team Lead, BC Hydro Engineering
- Megan Boettcher, Physics & Astronomy, Langara College
- Jennifer Baker, Staff Scientist, Radiation Biology Unit, BC Cancer Research Centre
“Surprising to say, but for women, we still live in challenging times,” said Margaret Heldman, Associate Vice President, Academic. “It is the responsibility of established women scientists to show our aspiring female scientists the way ahead by sharing our stories and by listening to theirs. And let’s not forget, as established scientists, we can offer some financial support as well.”
The 49Women in Science Circle brings together successful women who want to support, create opportunities for, and have an impact on young women who study and seek to establish careers in the STEM field. Funds raised by the 49Women in Science Circle will support and nurture women as they study at Langara and move on to further education and careers. Beyond the awards, Circle members also come together to network and mentor STEM students through a series of events hosted by the Circle throughout the year.
“The 49Women in Science scholarships and bursaries not only give students much-needed financial help, but also show them that we acknowledge their hard work and want to encourage them on their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) journey,” added Gerda Krause, Dean, Faculty of Science.
“Being a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, and lover of wildlife, I have dreamed of being a forensic science researcher since elementary school,”said Lisa Yeung, a second year chemistry student. “But I have never received so much hands-on work at a school where I can apply my knowledge, until I was given the opportunity to study at Langara College and do genetic research with one of my favorite instructors here.”
