Vancouver, BC - Langara Nursing Instructor, Suki Grewal was selected as one of twelve women to be featured in the Remarkable Women of 2014: Year of Reconciliation poster series. The posters were unveiled at a public luncheon and reception sponsored by Urban Fare on March 8, 2014.

Suki Grewal was honoured for her tireless work, over the past three decades, to build bridges between the distinct cultures in Vancouver. She is a founder of the South Asian Family Association (SAFA), which engages youth through arts and culture programs to promote cross-cultural harmony and tolerance, and a grassroots organizer for community festivals such as the Sawan Mela and Desi Dhamakaa. As a health care practitioner, Grewal continues to work to raise awareness around health issues in the South Asian community.

“By raising such awareness amongst the mainstream and teaching South Asians about other cultures, we will be better able to increase our knowledge holistically as a larger community, resulting in a better respect for each other as people, and as distinct cultures, while working towards the goal of cultural harmony,” said Grewal.

“We are pleased that Suki has been honoured for her ongoing hard work,” said Janine Lennox, Chair of the Langara School of Nursing. “Last year she won an award of Excellence in Advocacy from the College of Registered Nurses of BC. As well as her work in the community, she works with our students to support them in International practice experiences in both India and Kenya. We are proud of Suki’s work and that she belongs to Langara.”

The Remarkable Women poster series was established by the Vancouver Parks Board in 2008 to honour women who are passionate about building understanding and empathy between people. The Remarkable Women of 2014 include Shehnaz Cavey, Winnie Cheung, Anntuaneth Figueroa, Judy Graves, Suki Grewal, Gwen Haworth, Keiko Honda, Lila Johnston, Angela Marie MacDougal, Raven-Wing, Darleen Point, and Carleen Thomas. The posters are displayed in community centres, schools, and libraries throughout Vancouver.
