Insurance

The central focus of the Insurance course delivery is student learning. The course is delivered asynchronously to maximize flexibility for the learner and help address individual learning needs and styles. Course is delivered online via Brightspace over a period of 12 weeks. Students will be able to access the entire course on the mentioned course start date; learners don't need to be online on that specific date or any specific date or time during the course. Students can do the course at their own pace between the course start and end date. The instructor will be available on Brightspace and email to support any student. The course will be taught using a combination of various instructional techniques such as recorded lessons, discussion board, practice activities, and assigned pre-readings for every week etc. The assessments would also include weekly quizzes and other assignments such as Concept Maps.

Whether you are a new to the general insurance industry, or a support employee at an insurance company, brokerage or adjusting firm, the General Insurance Essentials Course is your gateway to a rewarding career in the growing and diverse fields of insurance.

The training provided in the General Insurance Essentials Course (GIE) covers all the fundamentals for beginning students, and fulfills the requirements of the Insurance Council of BC for obtaining a Level 1 Salesperson/Adjuster license. Langara College CS is offering this course in partnership with the Insurance Institute of British Columbia (IIBC), and in conjunction with the Insurance Institute of Canada.

Students will become members of the IIBC, and they will be awarded their certificate by the IIBC. The course also prepares students to write the in-class GIE final exam, which is included as part of the course fee. They may also apply for equivalency credit towards the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation program of the Insurance Institute of Canada.

Once the training and exam are completed, students must obtain the sponsorship of a licensed insurance agency or licensed adjusting firm in order to get a Level 1 license. 70% of our students obtain license within 1 year and they have jobs.

For more detailed information about the GIE, and to learn about other designations in the insurance industry, visit the IIBC website. For more information on the course, contact  Program Coordinator at 604.218.1783.
