Overview:

The Environmental Youth Alliance is a registered charity supporting equity-seeking youth to connect with nature, community, and skills to become environmental stewards and community leaders. We provide free land-based education and paid employment-training programs in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

 

Peer Mentor

Position Description:

Are you looking to develop your environmental leadership skills?Are you curious about environmental education and working with youth?Then the Peer Mentors program is for you!Peer Mentors work alongside experienced EYA staff to support our land-based education programs for high school-aged youth in Strathcona Community Gardens. You bring your experience and passion and we provide a half-day training, one-on-one mentorship with an EYA educator, and opportunities to practice facilitation and group leadership.Applications are accepted year-round, and at the moment, we are prioritizing applications for our Spring programs. Additionally, you can apply to be contacted for our future programs too! Applications are reviewed before every program season in February, May, and September.As a Peer Mentor, you will:Deepen your knowledge of native plants and wildlifeLearn about environmental education & facilitationGain experience working with children and youth facing barriersLead activities relevant to program contentMentor & support program participantsDevelop leadership & communication skillsFacilitate basic activities (with support from your Program Coordinator)Help with program set-up & clean-upTake photos for EYA’s social media channelsHelp maintain wildlife habitat areas – weeding, watering, plantingGain volunteer hours & experience for your resumePosition yourself for potential job opportunities (many EYA peer mentors have gone on to become paid EYA staff)This spring, we are looking for Peer Mentors that can commit to supporting:1.) One of our 10-week land-based programs (5-hour sessions + group training for a total of ~60 hours of volunteer time). There are 4 different programs this spring that you can choose from and their schedules are below:- Land Guardians | Feb 23 – May 11 (no programs on March 16 & 23) | Thursdays 10: 30 – 2:30 | 10 Sessions- Rewilding for Wildlife | Feb 25 – May 6 (no programs on April 8) | Saturdays 10:30 – 2:30 | 10 Sessions- Native Plant Nursery | Feb 25 – May 6 (no programs on April 8) | Saturdays 10:30 – 2:30 | 10 Sessions- Nature Stewards Leadership | Feb 26 – May 7 (no programs on April 9) | Sundays 10:30 – 2:30 | 10 Sessions2.) Minimum of two field trips between March 27 – June 15. Field trips usually run during weekdays for up to 4 hours. One of our program coordinators will contact you with a field trip schedule every two weeks or so once it starts for you to sign up. To honour your time for the field trips, we are able to compensate peer mentors $20/day.This program is open to youth ages 18-25, with exceptions on a case-by-case basis. At EYA, we lift up diversity in both humans and non-humans alike! We encourage and prioritize applications from individuals who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), LGBTQ2S+, and those facing other barriers.

There is no required skills for this position. We just ask you come with the willingness to learn, open-mindedness, and passion for nature!
