Substance use disorders affect all walks of life, regardless of income level, profession, age, cultural background and neighbourhood.

The number of opioid overdoses per year in Canada continues to rise. Canada is one of the largest per capita consumers of prescription opioids in the world. In recent years, the number of deaths in B.C. related to illegal drug overdoses has been more than 900 per year. The overdoses are due to a highly toxic and unpredictable illicit drug supply. Overdose fatalities are now the leading cause of unnatural deaths in B.C.

This page provides resources on where to find training to how to help someone overdosing. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use, call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS). NORS is an overdose prevention hotline for Canadians, providing loving, confidential, nonjudgmental support for you whenever and wherever you use drugs. Canada-wide. Call 1.888.688.NORS (6677)

Resources do not replace training on overdose prevention and response. If possible, we encourage everyone who can to get training.

Naloxone on Campus

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone is substance a that temporarily restores breathing that is slowed or stopped by opioids (e.g., dilaudid, morphine, heroin, methadone, fentanyl, etc.) preventing permanent brain damage and death.
Kits are available in BC without a prescription. The BC Take Home Naloxone program provides kits with 3 doses of injectable naloxone.

Is Naloxone safe?
Yes, naloxone is very safe. Naloxone has no effect if you have not taken opioids. It will not get you “high” and does not cause addiction or dependence.

Where to find it on campus?

Nasal Naloxone kits are available throughout the campus for use during an emergency. These are located by Campus Emergency Call Buttons and in the AED (automated external defibrillator) cabinets. Campus Security First Aid attendants carry injectable naloxone as part of their first aid kits and training. Many members of our campus community are also trained to administer injectable naloxone.
