Meet Madhushree, Indian migrant and soon-to-be PDD data analytics grad. Madhushree started at Langara during the pandemic and completed her first year completely online.

In a bid to find that student connection before graduating, Madhushree started looking for in-person experiences and came across VOLT.

“I was looking into a lot of volunteering opportunities last summer term, so that’s how I got into volunteering,”

Madhushree immediately signed up to be part of the GO Team. In her role of welcoming new students, she was able to provide a connection to campus for new students that she didn’t get to experience.

Volunteering for three terms, Madhushree went from the GO Team to being part of the Mental Health Ambassador program, which was a special way of connecting with and helping fellow students.

“We had the chance to connect with a lot of people through it,” said Madhushree.

Madhushree attributes her success in connecting with the Langara community to her time volunteering. Although the beginning of her Canadian experience was largely online, volunteering helped foster connections and improve her communication with others.

“I made a lot of connections through VOLT, including instructors and people working in different departments."

Among other things, Madhushree also developed new skills like having a green thumb, while working on a project to add plants near the Langara Students' Union Building.

Madhushree says volunteering has been an enormously positive experience and hopes more people sign up to become a VOLT volunteer.

"Not only is volunteering a great way to find out about the campus and benefits offered to students, but it is also a fantastic way to form communities outside your dedicated programs and contribute to causes you’re particularly passionate about.”

After Langara, Madhushree plans to continue volunteering and looks forward to the experiences to come.

“I've already registered for a few things like the farmers market and there was this one programm for growing chefs, where we will be teaching kids how to cook and grow plants” she says.
