When Anthony started at Langara, like many students, he was all alone.
Coming from another country by himself in the middle of a pandemic, he had to find a place to live, enrol in classes, and take care of himself.
“It felt overwhelming at times because there were a lot of things I needed to know and do, but eventually, I learned to ask questions and I found that there were always people there to help and guide me through. I'm still learning, but over time, it has become easier.”
One of the things Anthony learned about was the opportunity to volunteer with VOLT and at the end of his second semester Anthony signed up to be a GO Team Leader at New Student Orientation.
“My classes were online that semester and I didn't get to meet many people. Plus it was my first time in Canada, so I didn't really know anyone. But then I signed up to volunteer and I started to build connections and make friends with other volunteers. Plus it was really fun.”
In addition to volunteering at Orientation, Anthony also signed up for C Change, Langara’s community-based volunteer program and the Hiking Club. He also works in Athletics through SWAP.
For Anthony, volunteering has become an important way to give back to his community, offer thanks, and pay forward all of the help he received when he moved to Canada.
“I know how it feels when you come into a new place. I had no one to guide me or tell me exactly what I was meant to do. I found my place volunteering and at Orientation, I was able to help students find their classes, answer questions, and be a person to lean on. It put a lot of things into perspective because I’ve been a student who needed that. It feels good to be in a position to help and give back. Finding these small opportunities to help students is a big deal for me because this way I get to reciprocate the kindness and guidance I experienced.”
During his time at Langara, Anthony says making connections has been the most important piece to his success.
“The kind of people you meet will determine the places you go. In your first semester, make friends and go out and build connections.”
