Guest lecturer: Dr. Kevin Rey (PhD)

Topic: Access to Academia: Science Communication in the 21st Century

Abstract: The ivory tower of academia is a double edged sword: on one hand, it builds a protected environment where academics can investigate topics to a high degree of independence and focus. On the other hand, it reinforces a cultural divide between academics, especially scientists, and the people whom their work affects. This presentation will explain the typical “knowledge translation” processes in academia and contrast those with the evolving needs of science communication. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how the gulf between scientists and the public could potentially be addressed.

Speaker bio: Dr. Kevin Rey teaches Science Literacy at Langara College and is the Principal Investigator of a new research project in collaboration with the False Creek Friends Society. His academic career began studying organ transplant rejection, completing his PhD at Simon Fraser University, but has also included a multi-year stint as a freelance reporter for the SFU newspaper, The Peak. His current research and teaching focus is making academic knowledge accessible to students and the public by teaching the language and culture of academia.
