Langara College celebrated its 40th anniversary of its 49th Avenue campus with a public event. The 40 on 49th event invited high school students, current students, parents, counselors, and the general public to the campus for free food, great prize draws, live entertainment, and a full day of fun and activities.
“Langara has been a part of the neighborhood for 40 years, and with record-breaking enrolment the last two semesters, there’s lots to celebrate. It’s great we got the entire community involved to mark this milestone achievement,” said Dr. Ian Humphreys, Director of Communications & Marketing.
Despite the grey and drizzly weather, the campus was buzzing with activity as thousands of people came to be part of the anniversary celebration.
People were challenged to pet a cockroach, invited to taste homemade ice cream made on the spot with liquid nitrogen, participate in typing tests, race mini zambonis, and watch student films.
The first 2,500 attendees were given a special goodie bag featuring the College’s fresh new look. In addition, Langara gave away 5,000 hot dogs, 2,500 slices of cake, 2,000 cotton candy, 2,000 Vitamin Water, and popcorn.
Event highlights included the Vancouver Learning City’s CuriouCity game; photographs at the Photo Lounge (an amazing 1,700 photos were taken that day); and the Main Stage entertainment including a chemistry and physics magic show, performances by Studio 58, and music from Youthink rock band contest winners & participants.
There were prize draws during the event. A total 6,556 ballots were collected. The lucky winners were:
