Update on Climate Strike - September 25, 2019 at 9:30 am
Since the letter released last week, we have carried on our conversation with members of the Langara community regarding how best to support the Climate Strike while continuing to serve our students. We have been advised that a rally will take place on campus starting at noon on Friday, September 27, 2019. Based on those conversations, classes on Friday morning will proceed as planned. Faculty members with classes from 12:00 pm on can choose whether or not they wish to continue with their class, or cancel it to facilitate participation in the Climate Strike. Faculty members are asked to clearly communicate their intentions to students ahead of time. Staff who wish to participate are asked to discuss it with their leader, keeping in mind the need to continue to provide services to the campus community that afternoon.
Message from the President - September 19, 2019 at 9:00 am
Climate change is a critical issue for all communities, including Langara. The College supports the global community coming together to recognize the importance of protecting the environment and our planet. We are proud of the many initiatives on campus to reduce our carbon footprint and improve sustainability.
While it is the College’s expectation that students will be attending their scheduled classes, I also recognize the importance of our students expressing their right to participate in the global climate strike. As responsible individuals, I hope that should our students choose to participate in one of the local events, they inform their instructors to ensure they are not missing any course work, assignments or exams that, if missed, would impact their studies.
Langara has a responsibility to deliver services to our students, and as such campus will be open with classes running as scheduled. Employees who wish to take the day off to participate should request leave from their supervisor.
