Vancouver, BC – Several graduates and instructors of the Langara Journalism program are nominated for 2017 Jack Webster Awards, including three in the category of Best Breaking News Reporting – Print.
For the third consecutive year, the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award will go to a nominee connected to Langara. Following Shelley Fralic (2016) and Gary Mason (2015), instructor Kim Bolan will receive the award at this year’s ceremony, October 12. Bolan is known for her outstanding reporting covering topic such as the Air India terrorist bombing, organized crime in B.C. and the on-going issue of gang violence. Her career has spanned 33 years so far, all at The Vancouver Sun. She is also nominated in Best Breaking News Reporting – Print for her story, Death of an Angel.
Mason is also nominated, along with Justine Hunter (Alumna, 1987), in the Best Breaking News Reporting – Print category for their story, Wild West Politics; Hunter is also nominated for Excellence in Digital Journalism. Mike Hager (Alumnus, 2011) is nominated along with several colleagues, also in the Best Breaking News Reporting – Print category.
Gordon Hoekstra (Alumnus, 1993) is nominated in the category Excellence in Feature/Enterprise Reporting – Print for his feature, Seismic rift. CBC Radio reporter Bridgette Watson (Alumna, 2016) is nominated in the category of Excellence in Feature/Enterprise Reporting – Radio for her story DIY Death: Rite at home.

About the Jack Webster Foundation
The Jack Webster Foundation was established in 1986 by the community to recognize excellence in British Columbia journalism in honour of legendary BC reporter, Jack Webster. BC-based journalists reporting for BC news organizations on stories for BC audiences were eligible to enter the 2016 Jack Webster Awards. Entries published or aired between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016 were eligible. Entries were submitted by a journalist or team of journalists working in print, radio, TV, and online media.
