Vancouver, BC -- Langara College continued its tradition of recognizing student volunteers yesterday during the VOLT Volunteer Program’s Formal Recognition Celebration. Together, 41 VOLT participants received statements of achievement for over 5,500 hours of community service.

Participants at the celebration were treated with a hot chocolate buffet and were addressed by Clayton Munro, Dean of Student Services and Registrar, who spoke on the importance of volunteering and the impact that VOLT has had on the College community. Warren Springer, co-creator of the VOLT Volunteer Program and Langara alum, delivered a moving speech about student involvement and how volunteering shaped his life and character.

Maggie Stewart, Coordinator of the VOLT Volunteer Program, formally thanked the students for their impressive contribution.

“Langara College has a passionate student body,” Stewart said. “It is wonderful that the College is invested in recognizing these passionate volunteers for contributing to the community.”

The Formal Recognition Program, initiated in 2011 with Langara College Continuing Studies (CS), is an optional program within the VOLT Volunteer Program. The participants log their volunteer hours and are awarded statements of achievement and non-credit CS courses for each milestone of volunteer contribution.

“It is nice to feel appreciated,” said Alisha Samnani, one of eight students receiving the highest level of award. “This event gives each of us a chance to be proud of what we have accomplished.”
