Vancouver, BC – Langara College is meeting the challenges identified in the Conference Board of Canada’s Skills for Success: Developing Skills for a Prosperous BC report through its diverse programming in such high-demand areas as business and management, computer and information sciences, communications, and engineering.
“British Columbia’s continued prosperity depends, in large part, on the capabilities of its people,” says Langara President and CEO Dr. Lane Trotter. “By 2020, the province is expected to have 1.1 million new job openings. 44% of those will be in occupations that require college or trade certification and a further 34% will require a degree. With more than 27 career programs as well as a range of flexible degree pathways, Langara is perfectly positioned to help both employers and employees meet current and future skills needs.”
Jointly commissioned by BC Colleges and the BC Association of Institutes & Universities, the Conference Board of Canada’s Skills for Success: Developing Skills for a Prosperous BC report surveyed 854 BC employers – covering more than 130,000 employees or 9 per cent of the total provincial employment – to determine what skills, occupations, and credentials are needed to meet current and future needs. It outlines the impact of the skills gap on BC and how colleges, institutes, and universities are collaborating with business and industry to ensure a prosperous BC.
