Vancouver, BC – The Langara Falcons men’s basketball team was recognized today for their incredible success this season with a proclamation from the City of Vancouver that designates May 13, 2014, as Basketball Champions Day.

The squad received the honour from Mayor Gregor Robertson at Vancouver City Hall alongside the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs, who were this year’s high school senior boys provincial AAAA champions.

The recognition follows the Falcons’ best ever season in the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) – a spectacular run which saw them secure a near perfect 20 and 1 league record, the PACWEST provincial championship title, and the gold medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships.

The proclamation praised the team’s “relentless drive to excel” and congratulated them on bringing “national recognition to Vancouver in the sport of basketball.”

“The team continues to carry on the proud traditions of Langara College men’s basketball,” announced Mayor Robertson, “setting an inspirational example of how much can be accomplished when talented and focused individuals work together.”

The team's players and coaches were joined at city hall by Langara's Director of Athletics Jake McCallum, Vice President Academic and Provost Dr. Brad O'Hara, and Dean of Student Services Clayton Munro. They presented Mayor Robertson with a Falcons jersey to commemorate the occasion.

"It's been an amazing year for Langara Athletics, and in particular for our men's basketball team," said McCallum. "To be recognized by the City of Vancouver through this proclamation is truly a special honour."

The proclamation follows a weekend full of achievements for the squad, who were named as Team of the Year by provincial organization Basketball BC. Point guard Brody Greig was also named as the BC Male College Player of the Year, and coach Paul Eberhardt picked up the Basketball BC Coaching Award of Excellence.

“What a great way to finish off an amazing year, with this honour being bestowed upon us by the City of Vancouver,” said Eberhardt. “The boys have worked extremely hard and they’re grateful for all of the recognition they’ve received.”

“We’d like to thank the City of Vancouver for this honour,” added Falcons star forward Jitinder Lohcham. “It’s been an amazing ride so far – we worked hard for a couple years to get to this point, and we really couldn’t have asked for any better way to finish the year.”
