Vancouver, BC - On May 2, 2014, Langara College will welcome top math students from high schools within the region for the 2014 BC Secondary School Math Contest (BCSSMC).

Preliminary rounds took place earlier this month to determine which students from the Junior (grades 8 through 10) and Senior (grades 11 and 12) divisions will compete in the final round. Each participating school will select up to ten students in each division to compete for top honours and cash prizes.

“Langara College is happy to be an annual host to the BCSSMC,” said Nora Franzova, Assistant Chair of Langara’s Math Department. “The math contest is a great way to challenge students’ math skills, while developing their competition skills in a fun, friendly event.

Students competing in the final round will complete a two-hour math test, calculator free, consisting of 10 multiple-choice and five long-answer questions. Faculty volunteers will grade the contest papers using a BCSSMC answer key while the participants enjoy lunch and entertainment, including a chemistry magic show by Langara faculty.

Over $1000 in prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants in both the junior and senior divisions. To find out more about the BC Secondary School Math Contest, please visit www.langara.bc.ca/math-contest.
