Vancouver,
BC – Langara College is
pleased to announce that it is entering the second phase of its 25-year master
plan to upgrade and expand the campus– the construction of a new building
for sciences and student services.
The new building will
add 12,039 square metres (129,587 square feet) of much needed space to the
College’s main campus on 100 West 49th Avenue in Vancouver. It will
house state-of-the-art biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, nursing, and
computing science labs, as well as lecture halls and multi-purpose classroom
spaces. The new construction will also provide a home for new students services
facilities and offices.
“We’re really excited
to be starting this new phase of the master plan,” said College President Roy
Daykin. “It is the first step towards making sure that we can upgrade our main
teaching facilities without significantly disrupting students and classes.”
The construction of the new building is Phase II of the College’s
25-year, four-phase master plan to meet the growing needs of the community by
expanding the campus and upgrading existing infrastructure. It follows the 2009
completion of two LEED-certified structures – Langara’s new library and
students’ union buildings.
Phases III and IV of the master plan include construction of a new building for
the creative arts and the renovation of A Building – the College’s main
teaching facility – to meet current building standards. Phase II of the master
plan is self-funded.
“Langara is currently
operating at 107 per cent of the Ministry’s enrollment targets,” said Anne
Lippert, Chair of the Langara Board of Governors. “It’s great to see the
Sciences and Student Services Building project moving forward, as it will
ensure that the College continues to deliver the highest quality of education
and services to our students.”
Site preparation will begin in summer 2013, with construction due to begin in fall 2013.
