Vancouver, BC – Langara and ad agency Rethink Communications have announced they are awarding not one but two $18,000 scholarships this year through the annual Rethink Scholarship contest.

The competition, now in its third year, invited aspiring art directors, designers, and students to submit classic black hardcover sketchbooks showcasing their creativity to be considered for the prize. Participants were judged by a team of representatives from Rethink and Langara, with the intention of winning a full scholarship worth $18,000 to the College’s acclaimed Communication Arts program.

However, this year’s judging panel couldn’t narrow down the contest to just one winner, and instead selected two awardees from the talented pool of entrants – Stella Gutierrez and Keiko Horiguchi.

Originally from the Philippines, Stella immigrated to Canada with her family a little over seven years ago and recently finished a joint degree in Business and Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University. “I see the Communication Arts program at Langara as an opportunity to learn from successful working professionals who can help me refine my design thinking and execution,” she said, after learning of her success in the competition on Friday. “My passion coupled with design skills and a good education will enable me to produce meaningful work that resonates with the world.”

Keiko is Japanese and already has an established love of painting. “At Langara, it will be a great experience to communicate with people who have different cultures and speak in English,” she said. “It will help me see the variety and complexity of our world.”
