Vancouver, BC – Langara College is proud to announce the recipients of its 2012 Outstanding Alumni Awards – actress and author Carmen Aguirre, philanthropist and former mayor Sam Sullivan, and public artist Joseph Montague.

The awards are presented annually to celebrate the contribution of exceptional alumni who have enhanced the reputation of the College through their inspirational careers. They were announced at a luncheon at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, attended by College President and CEO Dr. David Ross as well as members of the College’s Board of Governors.

“It is my sincere pleasure and honour to present Ms. Carmen Aguirre, Mr. Joseph Montague, and Mr. Sam Sullivan as our Outstanding Alumni Award recipients for 2012,” said Dr. Ross as he welcomed attendees to the event. “Langara is proud to convey deserved recognition to alumni who are truly outstanding. This year’s recipients are influential leaders who have made a positive impact in our community and the communities they serve.”

Carmen Aguirre is an accomplished director, writer, actor, and teacher. Her work draws on her experiences as a Chilean exile and activist, and her memoir, Something Fierce, was chosen as the winner of the 2012 Canada Reads Award. Aguirre has written over twenty stage plays and has over 60 film, TV, and stage acting credits to her name, in addition to receiving numerous awards.

In addition to being exhibited internationally, Joseph Montague is a renowned teacher of ceramics, drawing, painting, and printmaking. He is perhaps best known as the creator of The Fountain of Time, a large water wall in Vancouver’s iconic Library Square.

Sam Sullivan is the founder of six non-profit organizations that have improved the lives of thousands of North Americans with disabilities. He is a recipient of Canada's highest honour – the Order of Canada – and most recently created the non-profit Global Civic Policy Society to provide non-political research and reflection on civil society, local government, and citizenship. He also notably served as the 38th Mayor of Vancouver, an experience that saw him accept the Olympic flag on behalf of the city at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy, ahead of Vancouver’s own games in 2010.

Langara’s Outstanding Alumni Awards event was sponsored by Genus Capital Management.
