Vancouver, BC, December
19, 2011 – A funding announcement by the provincial government has earmarked
nearly $700,000 for skills training at Langara College.
The announcement was made on December 9 as part of a $13M investment into skills training in BC. A total of $693,998 has been reserved for Langara’s Employment Skills Access (ESA) programs – specifically for the Advanced Administration Skills, the Office Administration Skills, and the Business and Computer Essentials programs.
Now in its third year, the ESA program at Langara has provided skills training to a diverse group of people who otherwise may not have had access to the education and training necessary for them to enter the workforce. Langara has offered a variety of courses through the ESA program, including Bookkeeping, General Insurance Essentials, and Project Management. All ESA programs are designed to provide people with skills that are in demand for the workplace.
“It is so exciting and rewarding to see that the government – and the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism, and Innovation, in particular – recognizes the value of the ESA program,” said Eleanor Clarke, Langara’s ESA Program Coordinator.
“This program is another example of our commitment to enhance skills training throughout the province as we work to build an increasingly skilled workforce to meet present and future labour market demands and to provide British Columbians with access to new employment opportunities,” said Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism, and Innovation.
The funding to Langara’s ESA program is part of Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan, a government initiative to develop employment opportunities in British Columbia.
“Higher education is key to our province’s growth and prosperity as we develop the workers of the future,” said Naomi Yamamoto, the Minister of Advanced Education. “Under the BC Jobs Plan, we’re working with our quality post-secondary institutions to increase learning and employment opportunities, building the foundation for a stronger economy.”
