Vancouver, BC, September 28, 2011 – Langara College has forged yet another international partnership, this time with Britain’s University of Sussex.
The latest Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Sussex will allow students who have completed 60 credits of university-transferable study in Arts, Science, or Business at Langara to study towards a law degree at one of Britain’s leading law schools. This is the third international partnership Langara has forged in September: previously, Langara signed MOUs with Australia’s Griffith University, and with INSCOL Academy, one of India’s leading healthcare service providers.
The partnership agreement with the University of Sussex is unique in western Canada. Langara's part in the partnership is to provide students with gold-standard foundation courses that ready them for legal studies in the United Kingdom. The Law School at Sussex will guarantee a place in their program to Langara students who meet the GPA requirements, without any placement testing like the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
“Canadian law schools generally require applicants to complete a four-year degree, which - when added to a three-year LLB degree - would mean a seven-year program of full-time study,” says Dr. John Belshaw, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Management. “Through our new partnership agreement with Sussex University, full-time Langara students can complete their Law Degree in as little as five years from the time they enter our doors. Students get the benefits of study abroad in an English-language setting in an institution that prides itself on its International mandate, and they're in a position to join the legal profession that much sooner.”
Based on the British Common Law system, the Sussex LLB degree program is recognized worldwide. After graduation, accreditation from the local governing body -- in Canada, it is the National Committee on Accreditation -- and articling is required in order to practice law. To qualify for a guaranteed seat in the Sussex program, students must take 60 credits of university-transferable courses at Langara and achieve a minimum GPA of 3.01.
To learn more about the Qualifying Law Degree Programme, attend a free information session at Langara College on October 4, 2011 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.
