The Langara Nursing Program received the 2010 Outstanding Partnership Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association on May 15, 2010 at the Vancouver Coastal Regional Annual Meeting.
This award is presented to a partner who has worked with and contributed significantly to a Canadian Diabetes program or initiative that has had an impact on people with diabetes at the regional level. The Langara Nursing Program has partnered with the Canadian Diabetes Association, Vancouver Coastal Region since January 2008 to assist the Association in leading the fight against diabetes.
“The Association and the Langara Student Nursing Program has accomplished excellence in the work of education, awareness, advocacy and community development,” said Ivanka Lupenec, Pacific Area Leader, Public Programs, Services and Education, Canadian Diabetes Association. “It is always a pleasure and an honour to work in this partnership with the College and its students, and to gain new ground in helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while we work to find a cure.”
Eight Nursing students have volunteered their time, expertise, knowledge and skills during their practicum placements to help people learn about and live with diabetes.
These students have participated in community health projects in a variety of ways such as:
- presenting information on diabetes to the community,
- creating network-support groups and providing socially interactive activities for young adults living with diabetes,
- teaching elementary school students about diabetes.
Dr. Wanda Pierson, Nursing Department Chair offers congratulations to Shannon Redmond and to her students for their excellent work with the Canadian Diabetes Association.
According to Dr. Pierson, the Langara College Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is designed to educate nurses who will be able to work with individuals, families, groups and communities in a variety of settings. Student nurses, guided by an ethic of caring and a health promotion perspective, work in a variety of educational experiences where theory and skills come together for the provision of safe, competent and ethical nursing care.
