Elise Huisman

The 49Women in Science Circle supports Langara female students in STEM through scholarships, bursaries, mentorship and annual events.

This term's event will focus on healthcare technology solutions with guest speaker Elise Huisman, Senior Principal Scientist at Medtronic. Hosted as a fireside-chat with Patricia Aroca-Ouellette, Elise will share her career and education journey, followed by a question and answer period and networking session.

Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

The first 30 students to attend this event will receive a $10 Starbucks gift card!

About the speaker

Elise has a passion for creating medical devices and finding solutions, which has led her to her current role as Sr. Principal Scientist at Medtronic. Originally from the Netherlands, Elise studied Biomedical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, after which she moved to Vancouver and completed her PhD at UBC in Rehabilitation Sciences.

Inspired by her PhD thesis, Elise co-founded Arbutus Medical, a medical device company specializing in affordable orthopedic power tools, which she travelled around the world marketing. After solely working in a hardware product focused environment, Elise branched out and included software in future roles; working with two more health-related startups at HealthQb and XCO. While wearing multiple hats in a startup environment, she primarily focused on business development, product management and the clinical side.

When not in the office, Elise can be found out in nature either backcountry skiing, mountain biking the North Shore or playing beach volleyball at Kitsilano beach. She has a keen eye for design and is also an avid craftswoman who makes her own polymer clay earrings.

About 49Women in Science

The 49Women in Science Circle brings together successful women who want to support, create opportunities for, and have an impact on young women who study and seek to establish careers in the STEM field. Funds raised by the 49Women in Science Circle will support and nurture women as they study at Langara and move on to further education and careers. Beyond the awards, Circle members will also come together to network and mentor STEM students through a series of events hosted by the Circle throughout the year.
