Provocateurs wanted! Do you enjoy thinking about what others say as much as they enjoy arguing their own views? Langara's Department of Philosophy invites you to attend Philosophers' Jam, a forum for the expression of provocative ideas.
Speaker: Brian Garrett
People sometimes talk about being “a self-made man (or woman)” but how far can that be true? Given environmental and genetic causes, is there room for us to construct our own selves? How responsible are we for who we are, and thus for what we do? This session explores the notion of self-construction and questions the limits of how much control we have over our own identity.
About the speaker
Garrett, a Kiwi Canadian with a PhD from McGill, has published articles in the history of philosophy and in metaphysics, focused particularly on mental causation and consciousness. He is currently completing a book on free will. This talk will be a version of a chapter. Garrett is currently teaching at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
