This course explores the many possibilities in which the photographic image is translated into the painted image. Utilizing the photo as a tool and source of reference, and not as a mere copying device, the student will broaden their painting skills. Charcoal is the drawing medium of choice for artists because it handles with great freedom; from expressive and delicate lines to rich tonal depths. Broaden your knowledge of this often overlooked medium by using different types of paper, exploring contemporary methods of layering, and using different types of fixatives. You will also explore the historical use of charcoal and how it has evolved into a flexible medium for artists today.Bring a pad of newsprint, a pad of bond or cartridge paper, 3-4 sticks of compressed charcoal, and a box of vine charcoal to first class.

Discover the methods and techniques of oil painting developed by the masters: Da Vinci, Vermeer, and Rembrandt. Through in-class demonstrations, students acquire skills and techniques to enrich their artwork. Slide lectures illustrate the fundamentals of tone, colour, composition, and materials while guiding students through the systematic process of copying master works.Note: A supply list will be emailed prior to start of class.

This intensive drawing course will provide the skills needed for the sound practice of drawing. Learn correct measurement techniques by drawing still life and the figure with an emphasis on line and tone. In addition, the age old practice and discipline of copying drawings from the old masters will be studied. This course is an introduction to non-representational painting principles using acrylic paint. Experiment with materials and a variety of conceptual and technical approaches to abstract painting. Based on the elements of art and principles of design, you will explore the use of colour, shapes, line, and texture. Abstract techniques and systems will be included, with the emphasis on technical skills and personal expression.Note: A supply list will be emailed prior to start of class.

Our earliest drawings are of the human face, as are some of the greatest works of art. Through the use of live models this course incorporates a mixed media approach to portraiture. Working with contour drawing, tonal studies, and colour wash, students explore the physical, psychological, and spiritual elements of this popular subject. This course is suitable for all levels.Note: Please bring a 6B pencil and a 14" x 17" sketchpad to first class.

This beginner level course introduces the typical materials and techniques of watercolour painting, including basic drawing skills. Explore glazing and wet-on-wet techniques, flat and graded washes, as well as colour, value, and composition. Explore varied techniques of acrylic painting. Demonstrations and exercises provide technical information in mixing, colour theory, preparation, gesso, and brush selection. In this next level of life drawing students will continue to study the forms and proportions of the human figure, as in Level 1, but with an illustration-based direction. With the life model as a source of reference there will be more emphasis on how figure drawing relates to illustration in a storytelling and narrative capacity. Students will work on exercises involving the human figure while continuing to learn the basics of anatomy and proportion. Various media ranging from graphite, watercolour, pastels, and acrylic will continue to be employed as students begin understanding how the figure relates to the environment it exists in.Note: A supply list will be emailed prior to start of class.

For the prospective illustration student, learn to see and draw more believable figures by exploring the structure of proportion, balance, gesture, and value from an artistic perspective. Working with line drawing, tonal studies, and colour wash you will develop visual awareness and gain confidence in interpreting the fascinating human figure from life models.Note: Bring pad of 18" x 24" cartridge paper (not folded), two bull clips and drawing pencil or conte stick to first class.
