Training Materials Langara training materials for the new Printers

How do I print jobs I have sent to a shared printer?
You can go to any shared printer and sign in with your Computer User ID to release your print job.

When I send a print job to the queue, how long do I have to print it out?
Print jobs for staff and students are kept in the queue for 24 hours before being automatically deleted from the system.

Can I send a print job from a lab and have it print in another building?
Yes:

  • Any black and white print job sent to Employee-Black-White-Printer can be released at any B/W Printer Release Station
  • Any black and white and colour print job sent to Employee-Colour-Printer can be released at any colour Printer Release Station.

Is colour printing available?
Generally, no. Most shared printers are black and white printers. Some departments do have colour laser printers, but they are restricted to department members.

What sizes of paper are supported?
Currently 8½"x11" (Letter) is supported.

Is legal size printing available?
Generally no shared devices have legal sized printing, some restricted departments do. Please speak with your department head if you require legal sized printing.

Can I add shared printer drivers to my personal laptop?
No. Only Langara PC or Mac workstations can access/install shared printer queues on campus.

Can I print from a USB flash drive?
No, as a necessary security measure, the College decided to have USB printing disabled on the new printers.

Can I print if I am connected to Langara wireless networks?
At this time printing is not supported on wireless networks. We are in the process of working towards enabling this in the future.

Do employees pay for printing?
Printing costs are charged to departments depending the type of printing and the department. Only revenue generating departments are charged for black and white printing, while all departments are charged for colour printing.

Employee Printing costs are as follows:

  • Black & white printing: 2.5¢ per page, 5¢ double sided, all paper sizes up to tabloid
  • Colour printing*: 15¢ per page, 30¢ double sided, all paper sizes up to tabloid

*Please note colour printing has always been charged to departments, this is not a new cost.

Is our printing being tracked now that we log in to the printers?
Printing and copying has always been tracked in order to charge departments for their printing and copying usage accordingly. The old system tracked printing when an employee sent a print job to a printer. Copying was tracked via department code.

With the new system, usage is reported via users and their IDs when they release a print job or copy at the printer. The costs are passed on to the applicable department. File names of what is being printed are not tracked, nor can other users see what a user has printed.

What is PaperCut?
PaperCut is the software used in the new MFDs. To become familiar with the new software, please review the training materials.

Where can I get support for printing issues?
Submit a Facilities Work Request.
