Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements effective for students admitted to the Fall Semester 2020 (September 2020) and Spring Semester 2021 (January 2021) Intakes:

Academic Requirements

  • Completion of BC Grade 12 or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older.
  • Minimum 3 credits of university-transferable courses with a grade point of 2.00 or higher.
  • One of the following:
    • LET with a minimum level 3;
    • LPI with a minimum 26 on the essay and one of 5 in English usage, 5 in sentence structure, or 10 in reading comprehension;
    • English Studies 12 or equivalent with a minimum 70% (see note);
    • Literary Studies 12 with a minimum 70% (see note);
    • English First Peoples 12 with a minimum 70% (see note);
    • A minimum "C-" grade in a university-level English or communications course for which Langara awards transfer credit;
    • A minimum "C" grade in ENGL 1120; or
    • An "S" grade in one of ENGL 1107, 1108, or 1110.

Note: Applicants who completed BC English 12, BC English Literature 12, or BC English First Peoples 12 prior to September 2019 may use these courses to satisfy this requirement.

Program Requirements

  • Completed Social Service Worker supplemental application form (available at Registrar & Enrolment Services or downloadable from the Web).
  • An interview conducted by program faculty. It is the responsibility of program applicants to contact the College to set up this interview.
  • Demonstrated emotional maturity, independence, and an affinity for working with people.
  • Previous experience in work related to the social services, preferably with a minimum of 40 hours of either paid work or of volunteer work.
  • Two letters of reference from employers or supervisors. One letter must be from a human service agency or organization.
  • Good knowledge of the English language and the ability to speak and write clearly and correctly.

Program Preferences

  • Preference is given to candidates who are at least 21 years of age by the time they enter the program. Opportunities for the required practicum placements for students under 21 years of age are limited.

  • Completed application and application supplement forms.
  • Official transcripts.
  • Two letters of reference.
  • LET or LPI scores (if applicable).

Program Notes

  • The program is demanding; therefore, students are advised to try to complete one or more of the academic support courses in advance of admission to the program.
  • Program participation and employment in the social services field require commitments of physical and emotional energies.


Be sure to check the prerequisites for the Arts and Science courses that are part of the program.

Once accepted all students are required to complete a criminal record check (CRC). This criminal record check must be submitted to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. The link to access the consent form to be submitted to the Ministry will be emailed to each applicant upon acceptance.
