About the Ceremony

Each ceremony is preceeded by a procession into Convocation Hall, led by the chief graduation marshall, followed by graduates, platform party, and faculty, beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to the posted start time of the ceremony. The duration of each ceremony is about two and a half hours, followed by a reception in the courtyard outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The Ceremony

Each ceremony opens with a rendition of the national anthem, Oh Canada, sung by one of Langara's Studio 58 students, followed by greetings and congratulations from Musqueam, the Faculty, and Langara's President. Over the course of all ceremonies, our graduates cross the Queen E's grand stage to have their moment in the spotlight.

Regalia

As part of the academic tradition, each graduate participating in the convocation ceremony wears the Langara regalia for their program, unless they are wearing their own First Nations, Métis, or Inuit regalia. Langara regalia consists of a black gown and a black mortarboard cap with tassel in addition to a program-specific hood, tippet, or stole.

Photography and Video

Professional photographers capture that moment as each graduate is photographed on stage as well as and backstage during the ceremony. Graduates receive previews of these photographs with information on how to order. The ceremonies are live-streamed and a recording is available online following the event.

Guests may take photos and/or video of the ceremony. However, guests must remain in their seats and be mindful of other guests when taking photos.

Reception After the Ceremony

Celebrate this momentous occasion on the šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (formerly the QET Plaza) in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, hosted by Langara's Alumni. There is music, photo opportunities, and more.

Live-Stream

If you are unable to attend convocation, a livestream link will be posted closer to the event, where you can watch your graduate cross the stage.

Convocation Checklist

This checklist will help to ensure you enjoy your ceremony day to the fullest.

1. Apply to Graduate

Graduation and convocation are two separate processes. Graduation is when you have completed all the credits in your program and are awarded your official credential.

Have you completed your studies? Make sure to apply for graduation! See Graduation Process page for more information.

2. Receive Your Credential Parchment

Credentials

Credentials are made available for pick up prior to Convocation. Once you have applied to graduate, you will receive your credential.

Credential parchments are issued three times a year. For more information, please visit the Graduation Process page.

3. Save the Date!

Mark your calendars! Convocation 2026 will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver, BC. The dates will be posted here soon.

4. Order your Regalia

Each student participating in the convocation ceremony will need to order their regalia which consists of a black gown and a black mortarboard cap with tassel in addition to a program specific hood, tippet, or stole. This is an academic tradition, as such no embellishments or variations to Langara regalia are permitted.

5. Order Credential Frames and Book your Portrait

Commemorate your achievement by framing your parchment. Order early and pick up your frame at Convocation.

Book your portrait session at Artona Vancouver Studio. See details below.

Tips for Graduates

Convocation is an amazing time! Follow our lead to help you get ready for your big day.

What to Bring, What to Wear
  1. Please remember to bring your convocation ticket and valid photo ID. Only government-issued photo ID or Langara student ID cards will be accepted.

  2. Wear shoes you are comfortable in as you will be walking up and down stairs and will be required to stand for a period of time.

  3. We recommend only carrying small items to the ceremony. It is recommended that you leave large or personal items such as purses, backpacks, shopping bags, and coats with your guests.

Transportation and Parking

Please allow additional time for parking as spaces are limited downtown. We recommend public transit wherever possible.

Accessibility Services for Graduates and Guests

Prior to the event, please contact convocation [at] langara.ca (convocation[at]langara[dot]ca) so that staff can arrange any necessary accommodations. If an unexpected accessibility issue arises that you were not able to communicate prior to convocation, on the day of the ceremony please come to the Will Call window and Convocation staff will assist you, or ask your guest to identify themselves to the venue ushers.

Closed captioning will be available.
