Langara College proudly implemented the first formal Aboriginal Education Policy in British Columbia. The policy was implemented to increase the success rates, representation, and retention of Indigenous students.

Through Indigenous Education and Services, students have access to:

  • Workshops and information sessions
  • Indigenous Counsellors – career, educational, and personal counselling
  • Advocacy and liaison support with band/tribal administration, sponsoring agencies, community resources, College programs and/or services, etc.
  • Assistance with the transition into Langara and/or transfer to other post-secondary institutions upon completion of studies at Langara College

Indigenous Gathering Space

The Indigenous Gathering Space, which opened its doors in 2010, is a rich, welcoming, multi-purpose environment for Indigenous students to connect while at the College.

Space

The Gathering Space includes various amenities such as a computer lab, kitchen, lounge area and study space. The area is designed for rest and relaxation should students need or want to escape from the bustling College halls. This space promotes opportunities for students to connect with friends, old and new.

Culture

The space features cultural pieces from Indigenous artist Debra Sparrow, a member of Musqueam and we also have an Elder In Residence in the space Tue-Thu (10:00am to 2:00pm).

Support

There are two Indigenous Counsellors who respond to the needs of the students by encouraging their educational success and personal growth. The Indigenous Counsellors work out of the Counselling Services department (B Building, B111) and they offer career, educational and personal counselling.

Events

Indigenous activities and events happen throughout the year within the Gathering Space and across campus. Events include:

  • National Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Smudging / Cedar Brushing Ceremonies
  • Indigenous Graduation Celebration
  • Cultural performances at Semester Kickoff
  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation / Orange Shirt Day
  • Sisters in Spirit Vigil
