Breaking barriers

Helping women in STEM succeed

As the number of women working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers continues to grow, a disparity still exists in the number of women choosing to pursue a career in STEM and to be able to achieve equal pay and high-level positions.

We want to be a part of changing this. In response to the obstacles women face in STEM fields, 49Women in Science (49WIS), was created. 49WIS brings together those who want to break down the barriers many of our students will face as they follow their science dreams.

“The 49Women in Science scholarship and bursaries not only give students much-needed financial help, but also show them that we acknowledge their hard work and want to encourage them on their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics journey,” said Gerda Krause, Dean, Faculty of Science.

Currently, funds raised through 49WIS provide support every year for the following:

  • Three bursaries for students in financial need, including one for a single parent.
  • Three scholarships awarded to female students in sciences for their academic achievement, rotating between programs.
  • Awards to assist female students interested in attending conferences or learning opportunitites.

But more funding is needed. As of 2023, 49WIS has distributed $70,000 through 45 awards over the last six years, and they are also raising funds to grow the endowment. Our goal is to annually support young women in each and every science program at Langara, in place of the current program rotation. All contributions will be matched doubling your impact.
