You will learn how to: operate a sewing machine, select stitches, use a commercial pattern, follow a commercial pattern guide, choose suitable fabrics, prepare fabric for sewing, layout patterns, pinning patterns, cutting pattern pieces, and marking techniques. Construction methods will include seams, seam finishes, structural stitching, top-stitching, pockets, facings, hems and include buttons and buttonholes. Students will sew simple projects using common methods, project budgets and suppliers addressed. A list of required patterns and supplies will be provided in the first class. Please bring sewing notions, a pen & notebook. Approximate cost of project supplies is $25 and up depending on pattern and fabric choice. Prerequisite: No previous experience needed.
Build your sewing skills while constructing a skirt or pants using a commercial pattern. Learn how to take accurate body measurements to ensure a good fit. Methods to sew and finish seams, darts, facings, waistband, hems, standard and invisible zippers will be demonstrated. Projects to be determined in consultation with the Instructor to ensure project elements fit the scope of the course. Please bring your basic sewing notions kit and project supplies as projects start in the first class.Approximate cost of project supplies is $30 and up depending on pattern and fabric choice.Prerequisite: Sewing Introduction or equivalent.
An introduction to textiles that provides a broad view of the characteristics and uses of different fibers, yarns, fabrics, finishes, fabric construction & terminology, knitting & knitwear, weaving, textile coloration & printing, fabric quality & care labeling. This course also includes a look at new fabric developments including smart textiles. Course may be applied as credit towards the Langara CS at VSB Sewing and Fashion Arts Certificate.
Choosing a nice outfit that you will be proud to wear is determined in large part by the material that you choose. Silk, wool-blend, cotton, rayon, brocade and so much more. Learn about the various characteristics of common fabrics and their uses in fashion design. Qualities include draping ease, stiffness, strength, flexibility, softness, and whether fabrics are plant or animal based (cotton and wool). Fabrics discussions will include identification of fabric use for specific fashions such as daytime or evening wear. Class includes one field trip. Students should have some sewing skills. Additional supplies cost approximately $10-20. Course may be applied as credit towards the Langara CS at VSB Sewing and Fashion Arts Certificate.
