Courses

No previous experience needed. Learn to operate a sewing machine, use a commercial pattern, choose suitable fabrics, do pattern layouts, pinning, cutting, and updated marking techniques. Construction methods include seams, hems, patch & side-seam pockets, and elastic or drawstring casings. by the end of this class students will have sewn a tote bag and pajama pants. A list of required supplies will be provided in first class. Additional costs approximately $10-$50 depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Please bring a pen & notebook to the first class. Prerequisites: none. Course may be applied as credit towards the Langara CS at VSB Sewing and Fashion Arts Certificate.

Use the knowledge and skills gained in Sewing: An Introduction to Sewing (VSB) (VFDE 1004) and build your sewing abilities while constructing a simple project using a commercial pattern. Instruction includes choosing a suitable pattern & fabric as well as pattern adjustments. Learn how to: sew darts, pleats, waistband, hems, install an invisible/lapped zipper, and use fusible interfacing. Please come prepared to the first class with paper and pen, basic sewing kit and a sewing pattern that must have: a zipper closure and waist band in the design; this includes any skirt or pants pattern. You will be given additional directions on the first day regarding picking fabrics to have for the second class. Approximate cost of additional supplies $10-$60 depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Pre-requisite: Sewing Introduction, or equivalent. (Formerly Sewing Beginners Level 1). Course may be applied as credit towards the Langara CS at VSB Sewing and Fashion Arts Certificate.

Please come prepared to the first class with paper and pen, basic sewing kit and a sewing pattern for a blouse or dress shirt along with suitable fabirc to complete the project. In this course learn the design process, how to research a target market, customer profile and demographic for a collection. Branding and image will be discussed as you create an inspiration and build a mood board for a collection. Topics include the fashion cycle, fashion industry terminology, fashion elements, fundamentals of design, and creating flats. Ready to wear and couture markets will be studied as well as price points. Color, fabric sourcing and fabrication will be explored in respect to the intended market and individual design concept. Students will learn to create digital fashion illustrations, technical drawing and presentation boards using techniques that are typically used in the fashion industry today. Using Photoshop and Illustrator will allow students to integrate their knowledge of manual fashion illustration with digital applications to create professional layouts and designs. This course is for students who already have basic skills in figure drawing and drawing flats. Students must have access to Photoshop and Illustrator outside of class time to work on assignments. Bring to first class 4G USB stick, illustration notebook, pencil and eraser. Additional supplies will be discussed first class. Learn how to draw the fashion figure in various media: pencil crayon, markers and watercolour pencils. Topics include proportion, drawing styles, fashion design & illustration techniques, plus an introduction to fabric rendering techniques and colour theory. Portfolio presentation will be discussed in this course & you will end the course by creating a final fashion illustration. Attendance at first class is mandatory. Bring to first class an 8"x10" or 9"x12" sketchbook (with metal ring binding), 9"x12" tracing paper, HB, 2B, & 4B pencils, a 12" ruler, a black waterproof fine tip marker & a current fashion magazine. Choosing a nice outfit that you will be proud to wear is determined in large part by the material that you choose. Silk, wool-blend, cotton, rayon, brocade and so much more. Learn about the various characteristics of common fabrics and their uses in fashion design. Qualities include draping ease, stiffness, strength, flexibility, softness, and whether fabrics are plant or animal based (cotton and wool). Fabrics discussions will include identification of fabric use for specific fashions such as daytime or evening wear. Class includes one field trip. Students should have some sewing skills. The 1st step in creating a beautiful garment is drafting & producing a workable sewing pattern. In this course, you will be walked through the basic skirt block & development of the 1st tool of pattern drafting. Get an inside look at industry sizing & how one can use the same process in order to create a made-to-measure block for your own personal use. By the end of the course you will have your own personal block, have learned about industry terminology, and have an understanding of skirt manipulation. Prerequisite Pattern Drafting Introduction (or equivalent). Students must have a solid foundation in sewing, as these skills are required to complete the finished project.
