Credential/Course Block Transfer

Langara College Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy → 2911 hours of study or 78 PLAR credits towards Thompson Rivers University Bachelor of Health Science

Objective of the Agreement

The University offers its students, and is empowered to grant degrees to the graduates of, the Bachelor of Health Science as delivered through TRU-OL (the “University Program(s)”).

The College offers its students a Continuing Studies Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy program(s) as set out in Schedule A of this Agreement (the “College Program(s)”). The College Program(s) is recognized by the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (https://www.cmtca.ca/). Graduates of the College Program(s) are eligible to write the CMTBC’s Registration Examination.

The University agrees to accept in the University Program(s), graduates of the College Program(s) who meet the criteria set out in Schedule B of this Agreement. The College’s students may apply after successfully completing the College’s entire program(s) and related requirements. Graduates of the College Program(s) who graduated from the College before the effective date of this Agreement are eligible to receive the same amount of PLAR credits as shown in Schedule B and detailed in Schedule C, as long as the following conditions are met:

The College Program(s) from which the student graduated is the same as was evaluated by the University in terms of learning outcomes, in-class contact hours, and weeks of study;

The College Program(s) meets the requirements of the Regulatory Body identified in Section A.5 at the time the student graduated, as described in Section A.5 or

The graduate has successfully obtained licensure as a Massage Therapist in any Canadian province that regulates the profession through a recognised professional body; and

The graduate meets all University program and admission criteria as set out in Schedule B of this Agreement.

Graduates of the College Program(s) who do not meet the above criteria for eligibility may petition for credit through the University’s standard PLAR process.

 

Articulation Agreement between Thompson Rivers University and Langara College

Program(s) Requirements:

Program requirements are subject to change. The current program requirements are set out below.

Bachelor of Health Science

Program Requirements

120 credits, including at least 45 upper-level credits, with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher over all courses required for the credential, as follows:

Lower-Level Requirements (12 credits)
  • 6 credits in first-year English (university-level composition and literature, e.g. ENGL 1001 or ENGL 1011 or ENGL 1101)
  • 3 credits in introductory statistics
  • 3 credits in humanities (other than English)
Upper-Level Requirements (9 credits)
  • 3 credits in research methods (RSMT 3501 or approved upper-level equivalency)
  • 6 credits in HLTH 3101, 4021 or 4011
Elective Requirements (15 Credits)

A minimum of fifteen (15) credits of required course work must be academic electives, of which a minimum of six (6) credits must be upper-level.

All electives must be selected in consultation with a program advisor to ensure they are appropriate for the program and meet the student's educational goals.

The number of elective credits required depends on the number of credits awarded for the diploma program and any other relevant academic transfer credit awarded.

Residency Requirements

A minimum of fifteen (15) University credits (distance or on-campus courses or PLAR); specifically, completion of two (2) health (HLTH) courses delivered by TRU-OL, Either two (2) of the following courses, or their equivalent:

  • HLTH 3101, Client-Directed Care Management
  • HLTH 4021, Health Policy
  • HLTH 4011, Issues in Health Care

Note:

Academic electives credits are courses that are not considered as professional development, applied studies or advanced training. Credit for ANES, POLY, RESP, and HLTH courses may be limited because many of these courses are considered non-academic, i.e. “applied credit”. Consult with your Academic Advisor for specific courses.

Students are responsible for consulting with their University program advisor to ensure courses selected are appropriate for their program of study and to meet educational goals. Students who proceed without approval may find that a course does not meet requirements and may be subject to credit assessment fees.

University Admission Requirements

Completion of, or proof of, enrolment in a minimum two-year diploma in Health Care or related area from a recognized program and institution.

Before graduates of the College Program(s) can claim the credits shown in this Schedule and detailed in Schedule C, the College’s administrative office must first directly submit a sealed transcript to the University’s Admissions Office confirming the graduates’ successful completion of the College Program(s).

Note: Students applying for admission to the University Program are subject to all University admission policies including the requirement to provide original documentation (e.g., official transcripts) showing their full post- secondary academic history along with graduation with a relevant diploma in the health care field from a recognized program and institution.

The College Program(s) articulate the following credits into the University Program(s):

Continuing Studies Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy program is granted a maximum of 78 PLAR credits into the Bachelor of Health Science.
