CLST 1102: Women in Antiquity

Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30 – 14:20

Freedom. Democracy. Philosophy. Modern societies often consider themselves heirs of these lofty ancient Greek and Roman ideals. But who was truly free in these cultures?

We will consider how ancient Greek and Roman women viewed themselves, their world, and the men who defined the very structure of their existence. We will examine the assumptions we make about these women based on our limited sources. We will ask if we’ve really come all that far - and whether ancient Greece and Rome are admired despite their misogynist ideals - or because of them.
