PHIL 2226: Social and Political Philosophy

Students will examine foundational questions and core concepts in Western social and political philosophy. Topics may include the nature justice, the nature and value of freedom and equality, the source of political authority and obligation, theories of democracy and punishment, and debates about reparations, affirmative action, and free speech. These discussions will be anchored in our program theme, and students will consider these issues in connection with Canada’s own process of reconciliation.

PHIL 2295: Philosophy and Remembrance

This course will provide students with an in-depth exploration of the philosophical themes surrounding “remembrance,” particularly questions regarding reconciliation and reparation, the ethics of memory, individual and collective responsibility, the nature and importance of guilt, apology and forgiveness, and the significance of public recognition in these processes, including whether and how educational curriculums should recognize history.
