Strangers on a Train is a monthly reading series hosted by the Langara College English Department that is devoted to creating dialogue between writers and writing groups that would not typically interact with one another. Each event features writers from a variety of genres and backgrounds: from spoken word to highbrow prose – the up-and-coming, the student, and the venerable. The goal of the series is to encourage discussion and promote collaboration within Vancouver’s diverse literary community (or with members of other Canadian literary communities).

All events are free to attend and are open to the public.

Strangers on a Train: 10th Anniversary

This event celebrates our 10-year anniversary of hosting the reading series. Started by Thor Polukoshko and Heather Jessup of the English Department, the inaugural reading took place on Wednesday, October 29th, 2014 at the Railway Club in downtown Vancouver. In the time since we started, there have been a lot of changes: we have changed venues more than once, we went online for the pandemic, and Daniel Poirier replaced Heather as co-organizer. But one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to hosting free and accessible readings, highlighting the wealth of talent within the local literary community, particularly our featured Langara student readers.
