Two-factor authentication keeps your information safe.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection to your account by combining something you know (your password) with something you have (your phone). 2FA ensures that it’s really you accessing Langara IT systems.

Starting June 27, 2023, 2FA is required for all Langara employees and students when logging in with your Langara email.

 

Set Up 2FA

Setting up 2FA on your mobile phone takes about five minutes.

Download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone to get started. Don’t have, or can’t use, a smartphone? You can also set up 2FA with a regular mobile phone (it works by voice call or text message).

If you can’t 2FA on a mobile phone due to accessibility considerations or other special circumstances, please contact IT via the AskIT Portal.

Yes, give permission to the app to access your camera so that you can scan the QR code you’ll need when setting up 2FA for the first time.

Try zooming out to 90% in the browser. You can do this by pressing CTRL + - and the "next" button should appear.

When setting up the app for the first time, the QR code remains valid for 30 seconds. If the code disappears or does not work, start the process again and have your phone ready to scan the QR code before clicking "Set up Authenticator App" in Step 2.

Using 2FA

Employees are prompted to 2FA once every 24 hours, per device, per browser, which means that you may need to do this more than once per day. 

 

Students are prompted to 2FA once every fourteen days. 

  • 2FA is not required for students using lab and library computers on campus. 

  • Logging in from a new device or a different geographic location will prompt 2FA. 

The Microsoft Authenticator app is available for Android and iOS. The app is not supported on smartwatches and other wearable devices.

iPhone users may find that the Authenticator pop-up blocks the login window with the number they need to complete 2FA. Tap “I can’t see the number” and the pop-up will refresh in a couple of seconds.

If you’re not connected to the internet, an authentication request will use a very small amount of data – approximately 100Kb – 200Kb per authentication.
