Human Rights
Overview
Langara College is committed to the principle that all members of the College community have the right to work and study in an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. The Langara Human Rights Policy covers:
- discrimination
- harassment based on a prohibited ground of discrimination
- sexual harassment
The prohibited grounds of discrimination/harassment are: race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person or because that person has been convicted of a criminal or summary conviction offence that is unrelated to the employment or to the intended employment of that person.

Procedures
The Director, HR Services administers the Human Rights Policy B3008. The first step is a confidential consultation – the Director, HR Services will review the matter and advise whether the matter falls within the Policy. If a complaint proceeds beyond the consultation, it must be in writing.
Under the Human Rights policy the Director, HR Services may provide mediation, or arrange for outside mediators or investigators. In all complaints the Director, HR Services acts as a neutral third party, not an advocate for either the complainant or the respondent. If a matter cannot be resolved between the parties and proceeds to investigation, a report may be made to the President. A complaint may be dismissed, or, if a violation of the policy is shown, disciplinary action may result.
Duty to Accomodate
The Duty to Accommodate is a legal requirement arising out of human rights laws. Where a barrier exists, or a policy or practice has adverse consequences on an individual in a protected group, the College is obligated to reasonably accommodate that individual’s difference, provided it can do so without incurring undue hardship.
The Duty to Accommodate most commonly arises in the areas of disability and religion. Students who require accommodation of disabilities should contact the Accessibility Services Office (external link) .
Individuals have the right to practice the tenets of their religion. In order to do so they may require time away from class, or some other form of accommodation. Students should request such accommodations in advance from their instructor, in writing, providing as much notice as possible.
Employees who require accommodations should consult with their supervisor.

Interfaith Room
In 2007, Langara established an Interfaith Room. It is located in C327 at the 3rd floor link between buildings A & C.
The purpose of the Interfaith Room is to provide a respectful and dignified space for individuals to practice their religion. The space is intended for quiet prayer or meditation, and is open during regular College hours. It is not intended for use as study or meeting space.
