What makes Studio 58's Production Program unique

The Production Program at Studio 58 is a three-year, full-time course for those who want a career in the technical side of theatre and other performing arts. The program also provides a background for the film and television industry. 

The productions provide the focus of the Production Program training: you will be taught by some of the top designers and technicians in Canada in a hands-on manner while giving practical support to the plays. We present four fully-produced plays per year in our intimate theatre.

Production students dive into the fundamentals of theatre practice by attending acting, movement and voice classes in their first term. Over the next few terms, you are taught by specialists in all areas: 

  • Stage management
  • Production management
  • Set design
  • Computer-aided design
  • Lighting
  • Costumes
  • Props
  • Sound and projections
  • Writing

What you'll learn:

  • Develop and visualize concepts through ideation and sketching
  • Create scale model of theatre venues and scenic designs
  • Leverage cutting-edge technology including 3D printing and laser cutting
  • Design period-appropriate costumes for historical productions
  • Prototype costumes using paper and mixed media
  • Learn video projection and digital media integration
  • Construct tabletop puppets with mechanical components
  • Design and build immersive audio environments
  • Foster productive collaboration within design teams, including with directors
  • Develop a digital portfolio and learn to market yourself as a theatre artist
