Vancouver, BC – Langara College is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT).

NVIT was founded in 1983 through initiatives by the Coldwater, Nooaitch, Shackan, Upper Nicola, and Lower Nicola bands to build program offerings that address Aboriginal community needs. Since then the institute, which is based in Merritt with a satellite campus in Burnaby, has grown to become BC’s primary Aboriginal public post-secondary.

Currently, more than 1300 students from two thirds of BC’s First Nation bands receive education and training through NVIT. The institute offers more than 25 programs, including university-transferable Associate of Arts Degrees and Diplomas, and a Bachelor of Social Work Program.

The MOU between Langara and NVIT has been created to open doors for collaboration between the two institutions.  Initially, it will be focused on developing new pathways for students to pursue degree and diploma studies.

“NVIT is excited to be partnering with Langara College, the leading undergraduate college in British Columbia,” said NVIT President Ken Tourand. “With our satellite campus in Burnaby, this partnership will provide opportunities for both NVIT and Langara students to experience two quality institutions as part of their post-secondary journey. Langara’s reputation for providing opportunities for learners aligns nicely with NVIT’s commitment to student success and I am very pleased to be working with them for the betterment of our students.”

“We are proud to be able to partner with NVIT, and this agreement is an exciting step towards developing opportunities for our students and community,” said Dr. David Ross, Langara College President and CEO. “As we have much in comimon - both NVIT and Langara are committed to student access and creating multiple avenues for individuals to achieve personal and professional goals - I anticipate that many new options for students will emerge in the near future."
