Delara Zarin has a passion for sharing the Persian language with her students regardless of where she lives. After graduating from Allameh Tabattaba’i University, studying Persian Language and Literature, she taught Persian Literature in high school in Iran. Upon immigrating to Canada, she started a Persian Language course at the University of Calgary.
Today, Delara is now spearheading the Persian Language program at Langara Continuing Studies. Persian is a great addition to the multitude of language courses offered at the College. Delara is happy to be able to continue her teaching adventures.
Langara’s Persian language class focuses on learning the language by introducing practical methods that can be used on a daily basis. It includes focusing on role playing and proper pronunciation. “It’s beautiful seeing my students delighted upon understanding the etymology or the roots of words. It’s an experience that really ingrains the language in their minds!”
Whenever one of Delara’s students uses a Persian expression in the appropriate way, Delara feels very proud. One of her most memorable experiences includes a student who did not speak a single word of Persian when he first started her class. After some time, the student was able to deliver a speech in Persian at his daughter’s wedding to the delight of his daughter, his new son-in-law, and all the wedding guests. These are the stories that encourage and inspire Delara to continue teaching.
“Some of my students have relationships with Persian speakers, some come from a Persian family and are looking to learn their familial tongue, others simply admire Persian culture or want to prepare for their visit to Iran.”
In her spare time, Delara enjoys creating abstract paintings, jogging, reading, and watching films. She loves the local library book clubs. You will also find her exploring the Lower Mainland, some favourite places include New Westminster Quay and Buntzen Lake.
