Vancouver, B.C – Langara College Continuing Studies has been helping entrepreneurs start successful businesses since 1995. This spring, Langara will launch the Part-Time Entrepreneur program, a weekend alternative to its successful full-time Self Employment program.
“As affordability continues to be an issue in Vancouver, operating a sideline business (also known as ‘side hustle’) can provide opportunities for individuals to earn extra money, gain increased financial security and independence, and follow passions or interests that may not be fulfilled in current jobs,” said Program Coordinator, David Schulte.
Entrepreneurs and small businesses make an important contribution to British Columbia’s economy, representing 98% of all businesses in the province (Small Business Profile 2016). The report also showed that over 1 million people worked in small businesses in 2015, 55% of private-sector employment in the province.
The Part-Time Entrepreneur program is designed for millennials and those who may be working full- or part-time who want to start a sideline business. Delivered over 12 weeks on Saturdays, the program will cover a range of topics and help students to develop a business idea that matches their skills, experiences, and passions that is also viable in Vancouver.
“We are passionate about supporting entrepreneurs to get their business ideas up and running, and are excited to offer a program that will allow a new group of individuals to explore the possibility of starting their own business” added Schulte.
Students will learn how to manage a successful business and make good business decisions, leaving the program with a two-year business plan.
Dushan Karunasena, owner of Dushan Flowers, completed the full-time Self Employment program. “The Self-Employment Program gave me a great business foundation and showed me the steps I needed to take,” he said.
Karunasena added: “I truly appreciate my amazing instructors and even today, long after graduation, they continue to provide excellent guidance and helpful advice whenever I reach out to them. These connections and the business network Langara has built have been instrumental in helping me to build and grow my business.”
