"I do not want to look back on my life and know I held on to any shame.”

When charismatic Anastasius Linck meets Catharina Mülhahn, it’s love, and lust, at first sight. As Catharina fights against her mother’s desire for a traditional marriage in favour of her independence, Anastasius works to conceal their identity to stay alive. As the pair passionately explore gender and sexual identities, rigid 18th century society aims to tear them apart.

Linck & Mülhahn was first performed at the Hampstead Theatre, London on 27 January 2023. Rights to this amateur production have been granted by Casarotto Ramsay and Associates Ltd, agents to Ruby Thomas.

This is not just a story of the past—it’s a reflection of our present and a testament to the power of love, identity and the resilience of queer people in the face of erasure. Anastasius Linck and Catharina Mülhahn’s battle to preserve their love in a world determined to eradicate them is a struggle that resonates with our community today. Their fight is our fight. Their love, our love.

As a queer and trans artist, I feel the weight of this story in my bones. It mirrors the experiences, frustrations and fears faced by so many in our community, especially now, when over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed in the U.S., and here in Canada, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith recently proposed sweeping historic policies that target trans and non-binary youth. Yet this production is not just a response to those attacks. It is an act of joyful resistance. It is a chance to reclaim and reimagine our narratives, proving that we have always been here and will continue to live, love, and thrive.

Time and again, straight people have tried to rewrite queer history, diminish queer identities and “honour legacies” by erasing the parts of our histories that define us. Bigotry, censorship and lost documents have left us following breadcrumbs to uncover where we came from. When the Spinster—a character embodying an older Catharina—warns, “Beware the person who tells you, ‘this is a true story’... Whose truth? Told where? And when? To whom?” it reminds us that history’s “truth” is often crafted by those who hold the pen. This is our chance to grasp the pen and define our own truths.

In the words of trans non-binary poet Alok Vaid-Menon: “We want a world where boys can feel, girls can lead, and the rest of us can not only exist but thrive.” This play expands what is possible—not just for queer people, but for everyone. It’s a journey not only toward queer liberation but toward human liberation. Our production challenges any notion that queer love and life are lesser; it honours Anastasius’s wish to “live louder,” boldly proclaiming that queer love, in all its forms, is real, radical and resilient.

Together, with a brilliant creative team of mostly queer and non-binary artists and an outstanding, talented crew of students, we are bringing this story to life—vibrant, fearless and unapologetically loud. We have created something that speaks not only to the past but to our present and future. This story reminds us that queerness, gender fluidity and love are as old as time itself. We have always been here, and we will always be here.
