Colleen Keith – Display+Design Program 2007
Graphic Designer
Colleen recently returned to Langara College to share her experiences with students. Here is what she says about her chosen career and experiences at Langara College:
“In Spring 2007 I completed the 2 year Display+Design Program now known as Design Formation. I then attended Capilano University for the IDEA program from 2008 to 2011 and it was an amazing experience. Langara led me to Capilano's program which focused more specifically on graphic design. What Langara's program also did was provide me with a variety of different skills and it was extremely helpful focusing me on my goals for the future. During my time at Capilano, I worked at Wasserman+Partners Advertising as a paid intern for 2 months and I also started teaching fitness classes on the side to make some extra money.
With all the knowledge and skills I gained at Capilano and Langara I was able to secure my current position as a graphic designer for a small company called EDG Experience Design Group. We design exterior and interior displays, signage, graphics and exhibits for malls, museums, cultural centres, communities, parks and more. My interior and display training from Langara is very useful in this role.
My future plans are to gain more experience, expand my portfolio and move to a larger company with a focus more on graphics with design in mind. My dream would be to design the Lululemon stores! I have also moved from teaching group fitness classes to working as a certified personal trainer. I work as a designer 4 days a week, and do fitness work the other 2 or 3. I really enjoy the diversity and flexibility I have created for myself.”
