Dustin is the definition of a life-long learner. His passion for learning and mastering a topic has led to careers in two very different worlds – medicine and music. Starting his professional career as an electrical engineer, Dustin was inspired to become a doctor after reading Parasite Rex: Inside the Bizarre World of Nature’s Most Dangerous Creatures by Carl Zimmer. With no formal biology training, Dustin came to Langara to work towards his goal, starting a 13-year educational journey. Dustin is currently completing a neurology residency at the University of Alberta Hospital and is a graduate of the University of Calgary’s Leaders in Medicine program, with a PhD in neuroscience. He is the recipient of the Governor General’s Gold Medal and a Killiam Doctoral Scholarship.
Dustin is also a prolific musician and songwriter. With his band, Heart Failure Research Unit, he has performed at music festivals including South by Southwest (SXSW). The band released its sixth album in 2018.
