Why did you choose Langara to study?

I came to Langara because it was accessible and affordable. I've always loved art and drawing, so the program seemed to be a great fit for me after looking at other options in BC including Emily Carr and Douglas College. I chose the Art in Merchandising program (later renamed Design Formation) at Langara. It introduced students to visual merchandising, interior design, and graphic design. It was a good fit at the time because I felt there were many pathways open to me in the field. After studying at Langara, I found myself hungry to learn more about art. A friend of mine who I met in Art and Merchandising highly recommended the Fine Arts degree in Emily Carr to further my art studies. I enrolled immediately after finishing Art in Merchandising, and my creative world really opened up. For me, Fine Art was a better fit than Commercial Art.

How did your time at the College contribute to your career?

It was really the foundation of both a technical approach and a philosophy. I transferred to Emily Carr to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and the experience and knowledge have successfully contributed to my career both in healthcare and the education sector.

What’s your favourite memory of Langara?

The College was open 24 hours when I was a student. Working on assignments late into the evening was the best time to work because there were no distractions. When we needed a break, we would play handball against the wall in the stairwell of A Building. It was a great way to vent some steam and get past any creative blocks!

What is a fun fact that you would like to share with us?

My love of ceramics started at Langara and continues today. Though, I don't have as much time as I would like to work on my ceramics.  I have a kiln and a wheel set up in my basement, ready anytime, to get my hands muddy.

Thanks for sitting down with us, Rita!
