Why did you choose Langara to study?

I chose Studio 58 at Langara College to study Acting for theatre as I had heard of its national reputation as one of the most prominent theatre schools in Canada. I knew from theatre industry professionals, that graduates of Studio 58 worked well in the profession – most immediately upon graduating. Its conservatory-style approach to studying acting appealed to mewithclose ties with instructors and fellow classmates. I was drawn to the fact that there seemed to be a built-in community of artists learning and working at Studio 58.

How your time at the College contributed to your career?

I met some of the most important people of my theatrical career going through the program at Studio 58. My classmates became my theatre collaborators, I received work upon graduation through contacts I met being involved in Studio 58 shows. Most importantly, I made some of my best, long-term friendships through the wonderful people at Langara.

What’s your favourite memory of Langara?

My favorite memory of Studio 58 at Langara is waiting backstage to go on to do a show called At the Black Pigs Dyke by Vincent Woods when I was in my 5th semester of study. I remember hearing the audience murmuring as the lights went down, my heart full of energy feeling my nerves and passion. I remember hearing the opening music over my shoulder played on a violin by one of my fellow classmates - soft, serene, moving - and I remember believing that I was doing something important. That this story I was about to tell, being together with my fellow comrades, was important. It was a powerful moment for me.

What is a fun fact that you would like to share with us?

Outside of my time as the Artistic Director of Studio 58, my favorite thing to do is play the guitar and hike in the woods.

Thanks for sitting down with us, Courtenay!
