When Mariana first came to the College, she never thought it would have such an impact on her life. Already a seasoned intercultural professional, Mariana had previously garnered experience at Fortune 500 organizations and accomplished important professional goals. Despite having an established career of 14 years, Mariana felt like she wanted to explore beyond her borders... and outside her comfort zone.

While studying at Langara College, Mariana was the recipient of the fall 2020 Jade Volunteering Excellence Award. She was recognized for her dedication and extensive on-campus contribution in volunteering and leadership. In the Spring of 2021, Mariana was also the award recipient for the International Student Club Award for increasing intercultural awareness among students at Langara College.

We caught up with Mariana recently to ask her what has been happening since she graduated last year, and what compelled her to come back and reconnect with Langara. When she was asked if she wanted to join the newly formed Alumni Engagement Team, she knew she couldn’t say no. “When I heard about the project to reunite Langarans and develop community building initiatives to give back to Langara, I was thrilled,” said Mariana. “This was an incredible opportunity to give back to the community that welcomed me when I first started.”

One of the ways she wanted to give back was through gratitude. “If I could pass along gratitude to a fellow Langaran it would be Felipe Moreira, the LSM PDD program coordinator at the time. Felipe always promoted the volunteer opportunities offered by the College and encouraged me and other students to participate and lead them,” said Mariana.

Mariana currently works as a Senior Global Mobility Analyst at Vale. She hopes to continue supporting alumni volunteer initiatives and help grow the Alumni Engagement team.
